Homegrown Heirloom Seeds from Our Permaculture Homestead

Saving Corn Seeds

Corn for fresh eating is harvested once the ears become full. However to save corn seeds for future planting one or more ears must be left on the plant until the husks become fully dry and the corn kernels are dry and hard. The seed may be saved either on the cob until planting time or the kernels may be removed. Note that many varieties of sweet corn sold by other companies (not Loganberry Forest) are F1 hybrid varieties, not open pollinated heirlooms. F1 hybrids are not suitable for seed saving as the kernels will not grow true to type. Corn seeds should be used within 1-2 years of saving.
